For this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile, 8th-14th April, design studio Form Us With Love presents Milan Oasis – a concept serving daytime as workspace with 24 meeting and working seats, power outlets, coffee, music and WIFI. During nighttime the space transforms into a late night dinner setting based around Scandinavian inspired Italian cuisine. The concept is created by Form Us With Love in collaboration with Scandinavian Business Seating and is Introducing the RBM Noor chair collection, designed by StokkeAustad, Grønlund Design & Form Us With Love.

RBM Noor is the result of a contemporary take on manufacturer and designer relations,  rediscovering Scandinavian design in a quadruple venture between Norwegian chair producer Scandinavian Business Seating and Norwegian, Danish and Swedish design studios StokkeAustad, Grønlund Design and Form Us With Love. In the making of RBM Noor, the design teams were placed at a creative research centre located at an isolated fjord in the west of Norway. During a five day workshop they worked together with an engineer, a brand manager, a textile designer, a project manager and a Research and development manager, with no computers and only panoramic views of the sea at hand. Together, the group sketched,  discussed and worked thoroughly to find the ultimate solution for a high volume contract seating solution.

“The trip to the fjord was very rewarding; we worked twelve hour days and went to bed tired but incredibly happy. It was the atmosphere that changed us, we all arrived as strangers and competitors and left as friends and co-workers”, says Form Us With Love.

Built on a molded seat with four different leg structures, RBM Noor creates more than fourteen different chair options all available to dismantle and recycle. The flexibility carefully brings the chair to a new level of usability.

The RBM Noor chair is changing manufacturing and designer relations forever,  and for the better. RBM Noor is not based on the beauty notion of a single designer. What was created is a true design, emphasized by every aspect of the process. Combining multiple thoughts and ideas in every step, the design teams really want you to look at RBM Noor and think; this is really well thought out. Fascinated about the idea of community,  Scandinavian Business Seating explored their own interpretation of Scandinavian identity through a creative relay race. One idea was passed on to someone else and finalized by a third member. Instead of going under the premises that all Scandinavian designers are the same, they wanted to use their experience of differences to really grasp the cultural innovations of Scandinavia today.

“If you work hard to reinvent creative structures you always reach something qualitative as long as your work is thorough. RBM Noor shows that design in business is changing. Today design can be a strategy, a process, as well as a way to explore cultural innovation”, says Kristin Ruth Amdal, design Manager at Scandinavian Business Seating. RBM Noor is an exercise exploring mobility, sustainability and Scandinavian identity, tossing the old royalty rules and investing in people, lots of them. Introducing no less than three Scandinavian design studios on one single chair, created in the realm of research, RBM Noor is the result of an impressive collection of skills.

“We see a shift in the way manufacturers work with designers. Traditionally, ideas were sent off to manufacturers and the designers got their royalties. Now we see that the manufacturer and several designers can work together during the whole process, paying everyone for their contributions. We want to be in the front-end of this shift, bringing the design much closer to the manufacturing community,  learning from each other for the greater good”, says Kristin Ruth Amdal, Design Manager at Scandinavian Business Seating.

Hood is a sheltering lamp that creates both room and light. Designed by Form Us With Love as a voluminous illumination shield as well as a modular LED pendant light, the pendant is addressing a modern atmosphere issue.

Much like the recent Plug lamp, Hood is built on necessity. Once again bringing a dual function light, Hood meets the basic desire of shutting things out and concentrating light on secluded areas like work-, conference- or dining tables. At the same time, the three-piece modular function lets you build the Hood to whatever size you need. Starting with basic corner units, one can add the compressed industrial felt sheets to scale the pendant for an extensive illuminating form.

“The Hood lamp is more than a lamp. Itʼs a piece of furniture – the size and material has an interesting effect on the atmosphere, making the piece feel so much more than just a pendant lamp”, says Form Us With Love.

The work on the Hood lamp began three years ago at the Form Us With Love studio. The challenge was to confront the awkwardness of today’s overly undressed communal areas. The solution was found when trying to absorb the focus around the conference table in the design studio. “Open areas become the ultimate flexibility, but emotionally it is not always preferred. In Scandinavia, most offices are too bare and you only have your laptop screen as your protective shield. Hood is built around the emotional value of a shelter, where the intimate room is protected, letting you keep the landscape view”, says Form Us With Love.

“The desire to enable people to improve their quality time by creating a room in a larger room, is much more than merely illuminating things. Comfort should be for everyone. When you sit under the hood you relax and start to think differently, protected by the form and provided with the warm light you feel at ease”, Form Us With Love concludes.

Form Us With Love teamed up with JoV, Belgian experts in hand tufting, on a quest to explore natural materials and handicrafts. “Our aim was to find a solution that would really show the detailed quality in both process and material. In a way it was difficult to even imagine a design because the carpets were so nice on their own, so we decided to tell a design story instead”, says Form Us With Love.

The Hidden Stockholm Carpets are three hand tufted artisan pieces made of finest New Zealand wool, tufted in a small factory in Porto, Portugal. Manufactured by JoV, the Belgian family owned company built on Jo Vandenbussche’s excellence in textile materials. “Itʼs a small-scale production, with promotion still focused on sales material and samples. Two years ago I would never have dreamt of hiring designers”, says Gilles Vandenbussche, the son of the family.

The collaboration between Form Us With Love and JoV began after Gilles and his Swedish agent Alexander Dahl came to see the Form Us with Friends exhibition during the Stockholm Furniture fair in 2011. They were impressed by the aura the studio conveyed and later said; “They are incredibly nice people with a certain coolness about them, something which is mirrored in their work”.

The Majority of the tufted and woven carpets at JoV are full colour pieces. All carpets can be bespoke, but the clientele are not likely to go on their own design ventures. Therefore, Form Us With Love, were honoured to become the first designers to interpret the JoV production line. “When we arrived at the factory in Porto, we quickly understood that this was not going to be any designer-client collaboration. We became good friends and we felt part of the history of the brand and it’s people, straight away”, says Form Us With Love.

One summer day, the members of the design studio went on an excursion of the surrounding blocks around the studio at Sankt Eriksplan north of the city centre. For hours they collected detailed samples of colours, textures and light. The study paid dividends, as it became evident that even the macro patterns of Stockholm were recognizable up close. By translating the images, the designers used the urban findings to create three carpet designs in three colour combinations; Fjärd, Gärde and Torg. “Every city has its own character and our study reminded us that we shall never forget the work that has been done before us. The light green, bright blue or warm grey are all tales of designers choosing colours for the city – honouring the planner who picked the blue colour for the street signs or the architect who insisted on a new, pink façade”, says Form Us With Love.

At the factory the urban tale was projected on canvases. The hand-tufters always begin with small patterns and extend to the larger areas, finally ending with the main colours. With a tuft gun in their hands they reload for every detail, covering even the larger areas in fine, line-by-line movements. Every square meter takes 4-5 man-hours to make. “It is incredible to see the final product and imagine the craftsmen keeping the straight lines with only a tuft gun and yarn, the preciseness of the making is astonishing to discover”, says Form Us WIth Love.

“For us its not about producing volumes, its about the chemistry between people. If more people recognize your brand you can spend more time on perfecting your craft. I have always envisioned art and design to be the perfect way to reach a wider recognition for our outstanding process and natural material selection”, says Gilles Vandenbussche.
